SEEKING SUPPORT: 'Malaysia a model Muslim country that can be relied upon'
PUTRAJAYA: AFGHANISTAN is looking to Malaysia for assistance in rebuilding itself after the US-led global war on terror, the deputy prime minister revealed.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the war-torn country was seeking "morale and material support" especially in terms of education, technical aid as well as in military and policing aspects.
"They admire our abilities, stating that not only were we a model Muslim country but one that could be relied upon.
"This is our uniqueness of which Malaysian Muslims here should be proud of," he told a crowd of 1,000 people when opening the SMK Putrajaya Presint 9 (2) and also buka puasa with parents and students here last night.
Present were Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Putrajaya member of parliament Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
Muhyiddin had earlier met with the Afghan Higher Education Minister Prof Dr Obaidullah Obaid.
During the meeting, Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, and Obaidullah discussed Malaysia's experience in formulating and implementing higher education policies.
Obaidullah, who was appointed Afghanistan higher education minister in March, was in Malaysia for a five-day visit, which ended yesterday.
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York in 2001 by the Afghanistan-based al-Qaeda, the country has been plagued by war and civil unrest.
"Many were killed and although the situation has improved, their social economic system was almost destroyed," he added.
Muhyiddin also said that Malaysians should be thankful they were able to observe the fasting month peacefully, unlike Syria, which is enduring civil war.
He later handed out aid to 50 underprivileged students from five different schools.
