Sultan Johor gesa orang Melayu muhasabah

JOHOR BARU: Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar urged Malays who intend to reject ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) to return to the right path.

He said the concept, which is better described as kedaulatan Melayu (Malay sovereignty), has been enshrined in the Federal Constitution and should not be questioned by any party.

“I find many do not understand the concept and have misinterpreted its real meaning.

“Based on recent developments, some Malays have even wanted to reject the concept.”

“They must return to the right path,” he said in his speech before launching the Multaqa Ulama Darul Ta’zim here yesterday.

Sultan Ibrahim said the concept referred to the status of Malay rulers and their subjects but it should not be misconstrued as a matter of master and slave.

“Instead, it refers to the kedau-latan (sovereignty) of Malay states with the ruler as the pinnacle of government.

“The system of Malay rulers and government has existed for centuries and has lasted until today,” he said.

He added when the British granted independence, they did so by returning Tanah Melayu to its rightful master, which are the rulers and rakyat.

Sultan Ibrahim said kedaulatan Melayu encompassed the status of the Malay rulers, Islam as the federal religion and Malay as the national language as well as Malay rights.

“Even before the formation of the Federation, Malay rulers and people have always accepted others.

“When the states were federalised, the rights of other races continued to be safeguarded in the constitution,’ he said.

During her speech at PKR’s seventh national congress on Nov 27, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail called for the abolition of the ketuanan Melayu concept.

On another matter, Sultan Ibrahim also urged ulamas to explain the concept and defend kedaulatan Melayu.

“Their (ulama) role is not limited to only upholding the religion, but they are also meant to safeguard ketuanan Melayu,” he said.

Sultan Ibrahim called for the state government to form an Islamic think-tank consisting of experts in various fields such as ulama, historians and researchers.

“The team of experts can discuss and analyse any problems pertaining to the Muslim community and discover ways to overcome them.

“I also want the state to have a research centre that will enable Islamic teachings to be developed and its results to be spread widely,” he said.
