Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that investment involves the construction of plant facilities associated with LNG projects including pipeline to the plant involved.
"I was told this is the amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Canada and of course, the results of a landmark Petronas is important for the country.
"In fact, the decision was also based on trust and positive feedback from the Canadian government so welcomed foreign investment into the country," he said.
He said this in a press conference with his counterpart from Canada, Stephen Harper after a bilateral meeting here today.
Earlier, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) Declaration of Intent of the New Testament for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion between Malaysia and Canada.
For the event, represented Malaysia Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and his counterpart from Canada, John Baird.
Harper arrived in Malaysia last Friday for three-day visit before heading to Bali, Indonesia to attend the Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2013.
He said he believed in the Petronas LNG project would be profitable to both countries.
He added that the project would not only open up new markets for Canada, especially in Southeast Asia but also provide employment opportunities to the people of the country since the contract of LNG gas pipeline construction was given to the Canadian company.
"That's why we believe FDI mutual benefit and in the case of Malaysia, we strongly encourage the inflow of FDI into the country," he said.
"I see the potential for security cooperation during the visit to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) yesterday and simultaneously, a commercial contract between OSI Maritime Systems Ltd. With the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) signed today.
